She was the Choral Director of Pearl Harbor Hawaiian Civic Club’s Concert Kana’iaupuni held in the 1970’s at the Waikiki Shell and the Neal Blaisdell Concert Hall. On August 8, 2018, King Kauikeaouli Kaleiopapa Kalani Waiakua Kalanikau Iokikilo Kiwala’o I Ke Kapua Kamehameha, III was honored at this Ali’i Sunday at Kawaiaha’o Church. He was born on March 7, 1814 and died on December 15, 1854. He was King of Hawai’i from 1825 to 1854. He was the brother of Kamehameha II. He was born at Keauhou Bay on Hawai’i Island. He was the second son of Kamehameha I and his highest ranking wife, Queen Keopuolani, and was of the highest ranking lineage. He married Kalena Hakaleleponi and had two children, Prince Keaweawe’ulaokalani I and Prince Keaweawe’ulaokalani II. Both died as infants.
Under his reign Hawai’i evolved from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional monarchy with the signing of both the 1840 Constitution which the first Hawaiian Language Constitution, and the 1852 Constitution. He was the longest reigning monarch in the history of the kingdom, ruling for 29 years and 192 days. His successor, King Alexander Liholiho described his reign as: The age of Kamehameha III was that of progress and of liberty-of schools and of civilization. He gave us a Constitution and fixed laws; he secured the people in the title to their lands and removed the last chain of oppression. He gave them a voice in his councils and in the making of the laws by which they are governed. He was a great national benefactor, and has left the impression of his mild and amiable disposition on the age for which he was born.
